Kaiser Permanente

At Kaiser Permanente, everything we do centers around you. As a member, you can work with your primary care physician to develop a personalized plan focusing on wellness and prevention to help you achieve your health goals. You'll also have access to member programs designed to help you be healthy, stay fit, and feel your best.

Kaiser Permanente offers individual and family coverage for individuals who may be: self-employed, working for a company that does not offer a group plan, students or recent graduates who are over age or not covered on a parent's plan, between jobs, waiting for an employer's group coverage to begin, a part-time employee who isn't eligible for group coverage, or an early retiree.

Here are just a few of the advantages we offer our members:
  • Our commitment that you're in control of your health care decisions
  • A diverse choice of affordable plans and plan types
  • Protection when you need it, as well as coverage for routine preventive health care needs
  • Special services for members only, such as online access to your personal health record, e-mail connection with your doctor's office, online prescription refills, and more
  • Products and services targeted specifically to individuals, as well as to small, mid-size, and large employers, plus Medicare-eligible individuals
  • The trust and recognition that comes from decades of service to the communities we serve
  • Strong, stable financial performance year after year, augmented by our reinvestment of earnings into our care delivery model and our community health programs
  • Our integrated health care system means that our doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals are all focused on one goal-our patients' well-being. Since the Health Plan is integrated into health care delivery through our hospitals and medical offices, our doctors are empowered to work with you to help you achieve good health.

    Overview

Kaiser Permanente, the largest nonprofit health plan in the United States, serves 8.7 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Kaiser Permanente is composed of Kaiser Foundation Health Plans (nonprofit, public-benefit corporations), the Permanente Medical Groups (for-profit professional organizations), and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (a nonprofit, public-benefit corporation). Please note: Kaiser Foundation Hospitals do not operate in every region.

What makes us unique is our integrated model of health care delivery.

We are an integrated health delivery system, which means that we provide and coordinate the entire scope of care for our members, including:
  • preventive care
  • well-baby and prenatal care
  • immunizations
  • emergency care
  • screening diagnostics
  • hospital and medical services
  • pharmacy services
  • As a nonprofit health plan, we are driven by the needs of our members rather than the needs of shareholders. We also believe that we have a responsibility to serve the communities in which we operate. Some of our community activities include:
  • providing assistance to the uninsured and special populations
  • training new health professionals
  • introducing new delivery methods into the health care field
  • developing and sharing better ways of caring for patients

    Awards and Recognition

    >Six out of eight Kaiser Permanente Regions (Northern California, Southern California, Colorado, Georgia, Mid-Atlantic States, and Oregon) ranked within the top 100 commercial plans out of 250 health plans, according to the U.S. News/National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) America's Best Health Plans 2007.1

    >21 Colorado Permanente Medical Group (CPMG) physicians were awarded recognition in 22 categories in 5280 Magazine's 2007 "Top Docs" issue. Cardiologist Jay Reusch, MD, was featured on the cover. He and colleague Chris Lang, MD, received honors in both cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.

    >In September 2007, Kaiser Permanente Colorado opened a first-of-its-kind research center dedicated to the task of pushing the latest health research into practice as quickly as possible. The Center for Health Dissemination and Implementation Research in Denver will serve as a collaborative learning laboratory and a resource to stimulate, support, and evaluate translational research. The center will share its work with Kaiser Permanente units nationwide, and selected non-Kaiser Permanente institutions as well.

The Center is part of the Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Research, which has conducted groundbreaking research on a variety of topics ranging from diabetes to the relationship of light alcohol use and heart disease, reaching the forefront of the medical world through Kaiser Permanente's researchers.

The Center for Health Dissemination and Implementation Research has received project grants from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

    >In April, 2007, Kaiser Permanente Colorado presented a proposal to the Colorado Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform suggesting one approach to providing universal health care coverage for all Coloradans and making improvements to the health care system. The Kaiser Permanente Universal Access Proposal demonstrates the nonprofit health plan's commitment to improving the health of our community. About 17 percent of Coloradans do not have health coverage. Studies show the uninsured receive less health care and experience worse results, often because preventable illness is ignored until the condition becomes severe. Kaiser Permanente Colorado believes that any state program should ensure quality of care and service, make health care more affordable, and improve value.

    >Under contract with the Centers for Disease Control, Kaiser Permanente Colorado participated in the largest population-based study of the safety of trivalent influenza vaccine, reviewing the records of over 45,000 young children from 6 to 23 months old who had received nearly 70,000 vaccines. This study has been important in defining national vaccine policy.

    >Kaiser Permanente Colorado was named the No. 1 nonprofit company by Colorado Parent magazine (October 2006 issue) in its annual Colorado's Best Companies for Working Families recognition program. The achievement honors our policies and practices to help employees balance work and family.
