HIPAA also provides additional protections for consumers, designed to help them obtain or retain health insurance coverage when they lose their group health insurance coverage and may not be eligible for a medically underwritten plan due to a pre-existing condition. Persons who have maintained qualifying health insurance coverage with a gap of no more than 62 days may qualify for what are called 'HIPAA Plans,' which guarantee certain levels regardless of the applicant's medical history.
