Enacted in 1974, it requires most employers to offer employees group health insurance. Hawaii supports the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA), which requires all U.S. citizens to have health insurance.
Hawaiians who don't have health insurance through their employer or a government-sponsored program can purchase health insurance from private insurers or through the federal exchange. Open enrollment for plans occurs November 1st to December 15th. People with qualifying events may also purchase plans outside of open enrollment.
