Yes. If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be able to get extra benefits. These extra benefits are not available if you have traditional Medicare – Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).
Medicare Advantage is designed to provide a different way to receive Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits you don’t generally get under Medicare Part A and Part B.
Many Medicare Advantage plans have offered extra benefits – like routine dental care, prescription drug coverage, and routine hearing care – for a number of years. Recently, the government has let Medicare Advantage plans expand their supplemental benefit selections.
Beginning in 2019, Medicare Advantage plans may offer more supplemental benefits that fit certain requirements. These services and items must be used to diagnose, prevent, or improve health conditions, or reduce avoidable emergency department visits. Previously, many services designed primarily to improve seniors’ day-to-day lives usually could not be covered as extra benefits for Medicare Advantage members.
Here are some of the more common extra benefits that may become available in 2019 and 2020.
Starting in 2019, some Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits such as:
Safety devices for the home that reduce the risk of injury. A health-care provider might look at your home environment in person. He or she might recommend bathroom safety devices or personal emergency response systems, for example. Your Medicare Advantage plain might cover these items.
Starting in 2020, Medicare Advantage plans may offer a range of extra benefits for members with certain chronic health conditions. These supplemental benefits might include personal care services, such as help with housekeeping, dressing, and home delivery meal services.
Not every Medicare Advantage plan offers extra benefits. That’s why you might want to shop around and compare plans.
