What is SilverSneakers?
SilverSneakers is a nationwide senior fitness program for Medicare beneficiaries. The term “SilverSneakers” may come from the hair color of SilverSneaker participants + the shoes they wear when participating. SilverSneakers provides beneficiaries with gym membership, fitness classes, and community support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regular physical activity is one the most important things you can do for your health as an older adult. The CDC further states that physical activity, such as what SilverSneakers Medicare facilitates, can help prevent many of the health problems that come with age.
How do I get SilverSneakers eligibility?
To be eligible for SilverSneakers you must be eligible for a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement Insurance plans that includes SilverSneakers. SilverSneakers partners with more than 60 Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance plans and is not a stand-alone program. Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement Insurance plans are both offered by private insurance companies to people ages 65 or older and people younger than 65 with certain disabilities.
Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. As well as SilverSneakers, many Medicare Advantage plans provide benefits that Medicare Part A and Part B don’t usually cover, such as routine vision, routine dental, and prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Supplement Insurance plans cover Medicare out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.
What does SilverSneakers include?
SilverSneakers includes access to 14,000 fitness locations nationwide at no added cost according to SilverSneakers.com. SilverSneakers classes have names like “BOOM, FLEX, Splash,” and “CardioFit” are designed for a variety of fitness levels and interests.
Exercise equipment you could have access to includes:
- Elliptical machines
- Exercise bikes
- Weight equipment
- And more
Examples of SilverSneakers fitness classes includes:
- Water exercise classes in the shallow end of the pool
- Yoga plus breathing exercises
- Tai Chi, Latin Dance, and boot camp
- Stability classes that strengthen the ankles, knees and hips
- Aerobics classes that build endurance and core strength
As well as traditional gyms, you could take advantage of SilverSneakers Medicare at
- Recreation centers
- Senior communities
You can go to any participating location in the SilverSneakers network. For example, if you enjoy both square dancing at your local church and water exercise at nearby gym, you can do both. Further, if you live in Florida and are visiting your grandchildren in Ohio, you can use SilverSneakers facilities in both states.
Each SilverSneakers location has an advisor who will introduce you to the program and help get you started. SilverSneakers also includes an invitation to sponsored health education seminars and other fitness-related events as well as a blog and Facebook page with fitness tips and exercise videos.
How do I find a plan that includes SilverSneakers?
To find which health plans include SilverSneakers, use the SilverSneakers health plan finder tool and select your state. The tool will provide phone numbers and websites of carriers that offer plans that include SilverSneakers. According to SilverSneakers.com, the majority (67 percent) of members have a location within five miles of home.
