Aetna Medicare Advantage plans: what’s included in a SilverSneakers membership?
Members may be able to use any of more than 16,000 participating SilverSneakers facilities across the U.S., according to the SilverSneakers website. Depending on what’s available at the gym you visit, you can swim, lift weights, take a group exercise class, or rock the treadmill. Any amenities available to regular gym members is typically available for SilverSneakers members, too, – so you can soak in the whirlpool or ease your tired muscles in the sauna, if your gym has them. Of course, if you want extras such as a post-workout massage, you’ll generally have to pay separately.
Not every Medicare Advantage plan – whether through Aetna, or a different private Medicare-approved insurance company – offers SilverSneakers.
- An Aetna Medicare Advantage plan’s SilverSneakers membership may also include the FLEX program, which is a network of senior fitness classes such as line dance, Latin-style dance, walking groups, and more. Ask your Aetna Medicare Advantage plan if it offers SilverSneakers, and see if a FLEX program is available in your area.
- There’s even a SilverSneakers app for your tablet or smartphone to help you find participating gyms and FLEX classes near you, and help you chart your progress toward your health and fitness goals. It includes exercise and meditation videos, and 4- to 12-week exercise plans for strength training and to help you build endurance.
- If you live in an area where there are no participating SilverSneakers facilities, your Aetna Medicare Advantage plan can tell you if you qualify for a home exercise kit including an exercise DVD and exercise equipment.
- SilverSneakers also offers a college discount program for extended family members through the CollegeSave program. You earn points whenever you exercise at least seven times a month at a SilverSneakers facility. Points can be redeemed for cash toward tuition at over 400 colleges and universities and anyone in your extended family up until their junior year in high school can use them to help offset college costs.
How much does SilverSneakers cost with an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan?
The SilverSneakers benefit is part of Aetna Medicare Advantage plans at no added cost (if applicable); it’s included in your monthly plan premium. You won’t pay an extra fee to SilverSneakers or to the gyms and exercise centers you visit. There’s no annual deductible and no copayment each time you use your SilverSneakers benefits. You can use it as often as you like at as many different gyms as you like.
Do all Aetna Medicare Advantage plans include SilverSneakers?
Some, but not all, Aetna Medicare Advantage plans may include SilverSneakers. Be sure to check your plan information before you enroll if you want a SilverSneakers membership.
Do I need my doctor’s permission to enroll in SilverSneakers?
Aetna Medicare Advantage plans don’t generally require you to get a doctor’s sign-off before you enroll in SilverSneakers, but it may be a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Your doctor can help you decide whether a fitness program is right for you and the best types of exercise activities to help you achieve your goals.
