Viagra isn’t covered under Original Medicare, Part A and Part B. There are only certain situations and limited prescription drugs Original Medicare covers. Medicare Part A may generally cover prescription drugs you’re given as a hospital inpatient as part of your treatment, while Medicare Part B may cover certain prescription drugs administered to you as an outpatient (typically medications you wouldn’t take on your own, such as those given by injection).

Many Medicare beneficiaries enroll in Medicare plans that include prescription drug coverage to get help paying for their medications. There are two main options for Medicare prescription drug coverage: a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) plan.

Both of these types of plans are available from private, Medicare-approved health insurance companies. Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans are designed to work alongside your Original Medicare coverage. Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans give you a way to get all your Medicare coverage through a single plan. They include Medicare Part A and Part B benefits (besides hospice care, which Part A still covers) and often include other benefits such as routine vision services and fitness programs. You still need to continue paying your monthly Part B premium.

When you’re looking for a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, regardless of the type of plan, you might want to look at the plan’s formulary to see if it covers your medications, such as Viagra. A formulary is a list of drugs the plan covers. A plan’s formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.
