Residents of Rhode Island have been required to have health insurance since a state law went into effect January 1, 2020. A few states like Rhode Island have passed their own health insurance requirements since the federal penalty for forgoing health insurance is no longer in effect.
The open enrollment period for 2020 plans in Rhode Island has ended, although those with qualifying events may still be able to enroll. Special enrollments must be completed by the 23rd of the month to go into effect the following month. Enrollment for 2021 plans will begin on November 1, 2020 at the state-run exchange, HealthSource RI or through private insurance companies.
